Release of the Week: ‘Pluton/Saturn’
25 April, 2007 | 7.56AMHe might have been DJing for 15 years, but he still hasn’t lost his youthful enthusiasm for dance music. When Beatportal asks sexy French DJ Sebastien Leger
via email why he started making electronic music he replies: “Because it’s soooooo gooood!!”
The double exclamation mark, and the fact that Sébastien’s new double A side ‘Pluton/Saturn’ is our Release of the Week, shows Leger’s career and passion is far from dwindling.
“Every time I start a track, I start from zero and I have no clue what I’m gonna do,” reveals Sébastien.
“I just let it flow straight out of my mind.
“I never have an idea in my head and try to reproduce it, because that never works for me.
“It’s all about the feeling and the mistakes!”
‘Pluton/Saturn’ is Sébastien’s first release on his new label Mistakes Music
, and the two tracks are very different, which the DJ explains is all part of the label’s ethos.
“The plan was to make two very different tracks.
“‘Pluton’ is a freaky funky electro house tune and ‘Saturn’ is more proggy-tech house with lots of atmosphere.
“All the releases on Mistakes Music will be in that way - two different tracks but all with my touch of course.”
Sébastien’s release comes at a time when minimal techno is dominating global dancefloors.
But despite the tide of minimal productions flooding clubland, Leger refuses to jump on the bandwagon, and is pursuing his own version of a dancefloor destroyer – namely maximal electro tech house.
“I just personally hope some more groovy sounds replace these loud cold techno and electro tracks that are everywhere,” he says.
“I want to hear something a little more musical than only one note basslines.”
Sébastien Léger’s music however, hasn’t always been of the highest calibre, as Seb is only too happy to admit.
“The funny thing is, I did my very first demo tracks using just a couple of first generation Pioneer CDJs – the CDJ 500,” he says, with a chuckle.
“I looped one CD, which had just a beat and then looped the other CD which had a disco sample.
“Both synchronized, and I just triggered the output as a full track.
“Of course those tracks never got released.”
