Red Shift EP
Red Shift EP
Speedy J [Electric Deluxe]
24 October, 2008 | 7.24AMIt’s been two years since the last dancefloor release from Dutch techno don Speedy J, but this awesome double-header of claustrophobic techno has been well worth the wait.
Released on his own new label, Electric Deluxe
, the EP is the first in a series of productions utilizing ‘parts’ from Speedy J’s ‘Kreate’ sound library.
The title track is based around an endlessly tunneling, low-pitched kick drum, with menacing clangs and compressed metallic shards ricocheting across a leaden pulse.
Less noisy than much of J’s output over the last decade, it’s nonetheless a stark, dark ride into the abyss, in a similar vein to Mika Vainio’s work as Ø and Consumed-era Plastikman
.
‘Bootes’ is murkier still, layering a distant, barely-there drum thud amidst haunting industrial rattles and alien insect chatter.
Occupying the murky limbo between grey-scale electronics and bleak ultra-minimalism, it’s a startling return to the fray from a true techno master.
