Red Session interviews Alice and The Serial Numbers

Alice is the Key member of Alice And The Serial Numbers [a] currently based in Los Angeles, California, who have just released ‘Thalassa’ on Red Session Records [l].

Please give us some of your background in music and where you are from?

I’m from Montreal, Canada.

I started producing electronic music in 2001 with my first CD project called mission_1.

With lots of help of my friends, I’ve been able to have my own online shop and distribute my CD and sell Alice and The Serial Numbers t-shirts online.

This project was a success in Canada and I got lots of attention from Canadian media on TV, radio shows and newspapers.

Then I did my first live European tour (by the way, I’ve never DJed and I’m a bit shy about that, hehe) in some underground clubs and bars.

In 2003, I produced another CD, Obit, which was electro bleep oriented.

Obit was number 1 on the Canadian electronic chart (chartattack) for two weeks, and then I did another quick European tour.

Everything from my first CD to ‘Thalassa’ was self-produced, from the tours to promotion.

Now with the ‘Thalassa’ project, I benefit from a lot of help from Red Session Records and I like it!

It’s been five years since my last album! I’ve spent those years playing live and remixing other artists with my electro-tech bleep sound.

What was your inspiration for creating ‘Thalassa’?

I moved from Canada to Los Angeles a year ago.

I think the wind of the Pacific Ocean and the sunny weather inspired me.

‘Thalassa’ is the goddess of the sea in Greek mythology.

When I was working on this song, I imagined myself in a bikini living a magic moment on a boat, kind of like in ‘The Titanic’…

‘Thalassa’ is the first time the public has heard your voice in a song, and it is quite beautiful. Do you think you will use more of your voice in the future?

Yes, it’s been my goal since I took singing courses last year.

And now I want to use my voice as much as I can in my future projects.

Thanks for the compliment!

You used to have a more electro-bleepy type of style in the past. What made you want to create the more clubby side of music?

Because I like to dance, and after playing live in clubs, I realized that some types of music are more inviting for people to dance than others - and I want people to dance on my music.

I can dance to experimental electronic music if I’m really into it, but it’s cool to bring good music on the dance floor.

I dance while I make music too - it’s good way to test it!

You also work as a sound designer in the video game industry. What got you into that side of audio?

The Challenge, and it improves my geekness level.

Making sounds for a video games is not easy.

There are a lot of sounds in the new generation of games, and making the sounds work properly can be difficult, but it helps me to stay on the edge.

What do you enjoy most besides making house music?

I think making sensual and physical music with good and catchy beats is cool, but I don’t want to be categorized as a dark and mysterious electro girl only; I’m eclectic, I like lot of different kinds of electronic music.

But I have to say that I prefer music I can dance to with lot of energy.

Have you worked with other producers and DJs, or do you mainly like to create music by yourself?

Yeah, I’ve made some remixes for other producers.

I found it challenging for the most part, but I prefer to create original songs.

I also think that in the current electronic music industry, it’s natural to do both original songs and remixes.

Remixing is a good way to meet cool people and make new contacts.

Because we here at Red Session Records [l] like to talk about production and what tools you use, we’d like to know what sort of programs, plug-ins and hardware you use the most? Only divulge what you want of course, we know about secret weapons!

Yeah exactly, secret weapons!

But I can say I really like Ableton Live - I’ve used it on a laptop since the first version.

Ableton Live and disco balls…

What are you up to next?

I plan to concentrate on original material and use my voice again.

I have some remixes in the horizon too.

I will focus on the dancefloor area for a while.

Thank you, Alice!
