RBMA Interview: Oneohtrix Point Never
RBMA Interview: Oneohtrix Point Never
29 November, 2011 | 11.27AMIf you had nothing but Oneohtrix Point Never’s recordings to go by, you might well imagine him as some kind of cybernetic skip tracer, a holographic traveler straight out of a William Gibson novel, chasing down ghosts in the machine. However, as this 98-minute lecture from the Red Bull Music Academy makes amply clear, Daniel Lopatin is just a regular dude from Western Massachusetts who just happens to be dialed in to frequencies from another dimension.
Lopatin’s latest album under the Oneohtrix Point Never moniker, Replica, marks a significant shift in the OPN sound. Where previous albums like Rifts and Returnal were grounded in the cosmic stylings of peers like Emeralds, on the new record Lopatin lets his trusty Juno 106 cool off while he turns his attentions to lilting samples sourced from vintage TV commercials. The results, tapping a kind of nostalgia for something you can’t quite put your finger on, are more spacious and more composed than anything Lopatin’s done before, but they’re just as hypnotic as his most tangled arpeggios.
Replica is out now on Lopatin’s own Software label, also home to the more pop-oriented work of his duo Ford & Lopatin, including some wonderful remixes from Alan Braxe, Optimo’s JD Twitch, Legowelt, and Gavin Russom. Check out the whole Software catalog on Beatport here.
