Rated A.U.X.

Aux 88 [Puzzlebox Records]

The universe that this remix package is in is light years away from the corrupted modern interpretation of electro music.

Even if you deliberately set out to locate a sound and attitude that was farthest away from the current, corrupted definition of electro (that is, third-rate, funky house cheese with a nauseatingly samey grinding bassline), it still wouldn’t come close to reaching the place that this collection of remixes of Keith Tucker’s Aux 88 [a] inhabits.

This is because Tucker has been around since Motor City electro took its first, tentative steps, but it’s also due to the fact that the re-workers keep an eye and an ear on the future.

Aaron Carl’s take on ‘Rated AUX’ is based on tumbling drums and ice-cool synths, while DJ Xed takes a more direct approach, his slinky bass pulses propelling the track into DJ-friendly mode.

‘Rated’ isn’t an exercise in purism either; Mr De’s take on the title track is based on grainy kick drums and a recoiling bass, whch is ideal material for techno DJs.

The Advent’s remix of ‘We Are The Future’ notches up the tempo with a stomping technoid rhythm.

Finally, the Pubahs version of the same track provides an eerie, atmospheric counterpoint to the tougher versions and sends Aux 88 back into outer space – electro’s natural environment.
