Rabimmel With A Vengeance

DJ Koze, Ada, Dee Pulse, Basteroid...

As was the case last year, Hamburg’s DJ Koze [a] has had a quietly assured 2008.

Choosing to throw himself further into the leftfield via remixes for Noze [a], Matias Aguayo [a] and most notably Sascha Funke [a], it was only on his delectable ‘Let’s Love/I Want To Sleep’ double-header that the producer found himself in a space somewhere near to the ‘normality’ of a club track.

‘Abudinga’ however finds Koze in a somewhat bullish mood.

Shaking off the lovable, oddball quirks of his recent remixes, he instead goes firmly on the attack, treading the dizzying chord progressions and aggressive bleeps and bass that have long since been his stomping ground.

The core stability of the track is stretched to breaking point with the pitch of the emotive, lead pad thrown about like a child’s toy.

As Dixon pointed out in our recent Weekend Weapons feature, “it has elements that are simple and one step ahead of most of the productions out there at the moment”.

By no means a one-trick pony, Areal 50’s credentials are further enforced by label mainstay Ada and Dee Pulse’s ‘Himmelunaed’, a track so wonderfully rank in its sound sources, it appears the pair scraped the bottom of a dumpster to obtain its primary noise.

Rounding off the package, label chief Basteroid chips in with ‘Rabimmolution’, an uneasy and shuddering piece of glitch-laden electronica that bounces its way through six minutes of jagged synthesis and enjoyably irritating rhythms.
