Q Fresa (Original Mix)
Mikael Stavostrand [Sushitech]
17 December, 2007 | 3.50PM- Section: Music Reviews
The Andomat 3000 mix of this release from Sweden’s Mikael Stavostrand has hammered clubs to pieces.
But hooky as it is, it’s essentially a percussive loop that does little else for the duration of the track unless you mix it with another loop or a vocal.
Dig a little deeper and discover the original of ‘Q Fresa’ from ‘Housedays’ and you’ll find it’s a whole new world of melodies, confusing vocals as well as that signature percussive loop.
Mikael has already scored an entry into this reviews section with his excellent Vita project on Kindisch and this is further proof that he’s one of electronic music’s most innovative stars at the minute.
If it has a fault, it’s that at twelve minutes, it’s far too long.
And if you buy a lot of techno right now, especially from producers like Villalobos, Luciano or Radio Slave — who can’t seem to make a track without it clocking in under 15 minutes (or thirty seven as is sometimes the case for Ricardo) — you’ll agree there are far too many long records around that don’t always justify their length.
‘Q Fresa’ is quality, but still quality overstretched.
