Pushcard EP
Danuel Tate [Wagon Repair]
24 September, 2007 | 9.56AMCobblestone Jazz is often unjustly assumed to be based around Mathew Jonson’s ideas, with his co-members acting as little more than session musicians for his more musically adventurous excursions.
However, this is far from the case, as this debut EP from CJ’s talented keyboard player Danuel Tate
discovers.
A renowned musician on the Vancouver scene, Tate’s heart is clearly devoted to bona fide funk, disco and jazz, with each track hear mashing up old-school jazz samples and Tate’s own vocal and instrumental talents.
The title tracks glistens with spiraling piano and trombone riffs, harnessed by a pacey, relatively upfront house pulse.
‘Bliss’ features Tate’s vocodered vocals, a sweet Rhodes lick, and snatches of scratchily-processed guitars; ‘Give It Back’ is a smoky jam, powered again by a prominent house kick; and ‘Slim Jim Boko’ traverses four decades of dance music with its bluesy glitterball curves.
Interestingly, the EP works the kind of blatantly jazzy sound that just two or three years ago would have been derided as old-fashioned pipe and slippers fare, but somehow, it fits neatly into the current climate, and certainly stands out from the abundance of over-produced, over digitized electro-techno-minimalist trends.
Proper house vibes from a proper musical talent.
