Prommer & Barck: Alex & the Grizzly
Prommer & Barck: Alex & the Grizzly
8 June, 2011 | 7.47AMPrommer and Barck’s recent album Alex & The Grizzly has been in heavy rotation around the Beatport offices; it’s the kind of record that just keeps opening up and revealing more layers the more you listen to it.
Christian Prommer and Alex Barck are a sort of nu-jazz super-duo: Barck is a member of Jazzanova
, and Prommer has played in Fauna Flash, Truby Trio, and Voom:Voom, in addition to his own project, Christian Prommer’s Drumlesson. But Alex & The Grizzly shows how far both artists have come since the work they’re best known for, stitching together elements of house, downbeat, techno, Krautrock, folk, and more. There’s a hint of Arthur Russell in some of the songs, and jazzbos may even recognize a reference to Henri Texier. If you’re looking for slightly tougher versions, meanwhile, check out the Peter Kruder remixes of “Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde,” along with clubbier reworks of “Everything” and “Gladys Knight” by the original artists.
The above video probably won’t win any Oscars, but it’s nevertheless a fitting accompaniment to the hazy vibes of “Pictures of the Sea.” Keep reading to check out a video of the duo performing live at Berlin’s Weekend club.
