Progressive trance like a Swiss army knife
Progressive trance like a Swiss army knife
8 February, 2008 | 7.36AMSwitzerland has been a good address for top notch progressive trance since quite a while.
Midimal
is another example that the alpine country is not only the leader in producing watches and penknives.
So who is the guy behind this project?
Who inspired him during his work?
And why is he searching for water?
Sam at http://www.chaishop.com met Chris for an interview.
This is Chaishop Music News. This is Sam @ chaishop.com speaking here with Chris “Midimal” from Switzerland. Hey Chris how is it going?
Hi Sam! I’m fine.
I returned from Mexico two weeks ago and it was quite nice, yes.
Great. So you have snow now in Switzerland?
No, there’́s no snow here but it’s fucking cold. it’s about 5 degrees under zero and we have to turn on the heater.
In Mexico it was cold as well?
No, in Mexico it was like 25 – 30 degrees and it was really nice weather because they had just one day with rain.
This was Mexico City, or where was it?
No, it was in Colima.
It was a small party from Collective Minds organisator.
It’s one guy from the Frakasounds label and it was his first party with a few artists from Mexico like Tron and Shove and one guy from Spintwist, DJ Milo.
It was a nice party until Sunday afternoon because the owner of the location closed our party.
Yeah, that was the finale!
Uff… ok. Frakasound that is also your label and now you are releasing an album which is called ‘In Search Of Water’, your debut album. You are in search of water but I think you have plenty of water in Switzerland, no?
Yes, you’re quite right, we have a lot of water here in Switzerland in the form of beautiful lakes, rivers and smaller pools.
But as you asked me before at the moment it’s ice only and it’s cold and the winter is very uncomfortable.
So where is the water? I’m in search of it.
Your album is progressive trance, it’s actually top produced. So I am wondering: Where did you get your skills for this great production?
I really don’t know.
From the beginning, I was very careful to keep up the high requirement of the quality in progressive trance.
Therefore, the whole production took more than one year.
But most of my skills, I taught myself, with some small assistance of Capo, better known as Liquid Soul.
And that was like honoring him for his perfect support.
He helped you in your production?
Yeah, a little bit, and he did the mastering as well.
I think he is one of the best producers because, you know, he played all around the whole world and his music is really special; he has done a new style of progressive trance.
Yeah, great! So that means he is also a source of inspiration for you? Anybody else that inspired you on this album?
Many different artists inspired me during the production of my album.
I made large production jumps between Liquid Soul and Perfect Stranger, Fatali and some different artists of the European trance scene like James Holden.
Markus Schulz and the whole minimal tunes of Germany such as Dominik Eulberg…
But finally I found my own Midimal
style between a huge selection of music.
So artists like James Holden and Dominik Eulberg influenced you. Are you also thinking about doing more techno / electro stuff?
I try to and I started a new project called Next, a collaboration with Dancing Devil.
I released a track on Blue Tunes on the new ‘Reflection Vol. 2’.
Your next project is called Next?
It’s Next, yeah.
And it’s difficult to explain what the style of Next is like.
It’s deep progressive with some psy influence.
I don’t know. it’s better you listen to it.
Generally, what’s your target as a producer? What do you want to achieve?
First, I would like to enjoy the time which comes now, because the album is released and I am really excited for the feedback from the whole world.
Is that all you do? You are making music full-time and playing?
Beside music, I am working 100% as an electrician.
But I want to quit my job next year and try to make just music.
I know it’s a big mission but I will try!
So it’s all about electricity in your life?
Yes!
Cool, nice one! Do you have a MySpace page or something?
Jepp, for shure. It’s http://www.myspace.com/midimalsd.
