Profile: Maus of Montreal - New EP ‘Let Go’
28 September, 2008 | 6.06PMMaus’ song titles are deep and introspective, clean and intelligent, and there is nothing less in the quality of the work that you can expect from her new EP called ‘Let Go’ on Thoughtless Music.
As early as 1999, Maus had already opened for David Bowie, Moby, St. Germain and Roni Size, and now she is backing her impressive DJ career which has spanned the decade with her production skills.
The story of how Maus got into production is one with a long history.
”I started to DJ in 1995 by organizing loft parties where my friends and I would play our new vinyl and share that new passion.
IDM, intelligent D&B and minimal techno are the genres we mostly pushed.
Plastikman
, Hardfloor, Autechre
, H.I.A., AFX
, Photek
, Plug, Squarepusher
and Kraftwerk were some of my biggest influences at the time”, said Maus in a conversation this week.
Hailing from Montreal, Maus explained, “The scene was alive and everything was possible.
It was easy to get 500 people in a party just by passing around some photocopies of the DJ line-up and info-line.”
After establishing her DJ career, Maus went on to do vocals on a number of notable collaborations – on Leo Cruz’s ‘Disco Musique’ (Saboteur Musique) and Blanali’s ‘Victim’ (Techsound).
She said, “I have never seriously taken singing lessons, but I have the intention to.”
Maus is also currently working on a live project which she performed once already at the Montreal Museum of Contemporary Arts in March this year.
Her new EP which was produced in 2008 is a great introduction to her sound – smooth, precise, probing. It’s compact and great for a tech house-infused DJ set.
About the titles of the tracks, Maus said, “‘About Time’ has two meanings.
“It was about time that I produced some of my own productions.
“I was also questioning my perception about time.”
And, she said, “’My So Called Friends’ is totally sarcastic.
“It refers to some people who want to get into our lives for very specific reasons and most of time for their own interests.
“Maybe it refers to some people from the music industry?”
...An interesting question and perhaps a common one asked by personalities in the music industry as they rise to fame.
