Nick & John Delagelis aka Dalasound:The fresh upstart recording duo of the Dalagelis brothers has long been at their electronic musical passion, for more years than most DJs who are 10 years their senior. At the ages of 27 and 26, respectively, Nick & John’s influences go way beyond the scope of any of their contemporaries. Born in America, but raised in Greece, the boys have meticulously honed their craft and are ready for their close-up. Both brothers began a vast record collection of all kinds of electronic music and started DJing underground parties in 1993 inspired by the big names of the time. Orbital, F.S.O.L., Aphex Twin, LFO and some earlier synth pop groups like New Order & Kraftwerk, to name a few, were their early favorites at an age (13 & 12 yrs old), when most of their friends were consumed with school & football. In 1994 they started hosting their own radio showswhich would eventually stream to far out areas of Greece on major Greek FM stations.

Their eclectic & dynamic sound would bring them toward the art of producing their own music in years to come. In 1998 John decided to take the challenge even further & entered the DMC DJ Championship in Greece at the ripe age of 17. After winning the state championship he took place in the finals. Against the odds he scratched and cut up 4th place, winning the accolades of the Greek music press, who called him the star of the night & best young dj. The industry took notice of this new wonderkid who was invited by Universal Trilogy (one of the leading Greek electronic dance acts of the time) to join them as warm-up DJ for their European appearances. John would continue to tour and build his sound in his home country, culminating in the gig of his life by being invited to play the opening slot on Orbital’s first ever tour of Greece in 2000. As if this man’s rap sheet wasn’t long enough, he also graduated from the Institute of Pasteur as a sound engineer, further increasing his experience and knowledge at such a young age.

From this point, the brothers made the difficult decision to uproot and move to New York City, which they felt was the epicenter for the music they were so involved in. Setting up the Dalasounds studio and getting to work on their productions was priority number one. Quickly the boys self released their first EP record in the USA, including two tracks, “Fat Oscar/God Is Great,” which gained praise from their intended targets. From this release, they became sought after by their favorite labels, which were after them for their remix
touch. Remixes for labels owned by Satoshi Tomiie, Dave Seaman, Chris Fortier & Gpal, to name a few. While having these great remixing successes, the brothers joined Chris Fortier and his label (Fade records). Assisting Chris to run the label was not the only duty they got. The boys got busy with Chris in the studio as well, by producing, engineering, mixing, editing and recording all kind of projects. One of these was Chris Fortier’s Balance 007 compilation. Their 2nd single “Bend Up” was released by Italy’s Mo-do Recordings, which took the brothers even higher, with not only never-ending DJ support, but also successful chart rankings on several of the sales chart indicators from the USA & UK. Their extended vocal remix of Micah’s “Come From” was exclusively featured on Hernan Cattaneo’s Renaissance Masters 2 album. In 2005 their original production “Quiet (Steve is listening)” was one of the main features on Audio Therapy’s album “Across Borders,” based on producers hailing from Greece and their alternative mix of it, entitled “Quiet (Stelios is watching),” was exclusively featured on Dave Seaman’s compilation “This is Audio Therapy.”

The production and remixing front was even busier for Nick and John in 2006, including the work for their upcoming single on Therapy Music titled “R2 Units Gone Wild” (original mix was included on Audio Therapy’s Spring/Summer Collection CD) as well as their latest original production “Utapau,” signed by Swift Records (original mix included on Gpal’s album Gpal 2). Some of the work included in their agenda was remixing Stel’s and Phatjak’s single “I Like Porno,” on Baroque records. And if all this wasn’t enough, Nick and John were responsible for a huge bulk of the production and engineering work on Stel’s “This is Audiotherapy” CD mix which was an accompaniment to Dave Seaman’s already classic installment, as well as hitting the international circuit with gigs in North & Central America, Europe and Australia. From breaks to prog and tech to more experimental, Nick and John’s dj and production style can be described as a combination of lush atmospheric soundscapes, tweaked effects along driving basslines and powerful percussive rhythms.

T C MANIAK – LE ULTRA FRESH

PSL017

Release Date: 22/12/2007

A.  Original Mix
B.  Presslaboys Remix
C.  Danny Lloyd Remix

Written & Composed by Pako & Frederik
Additional Remixes: Presslaboys, Danny Lloyd
Published by NERIOMAR di Omar Neri

TC Maniak [a] ‘Dynamic Duo’ is a phrase synonymous with camp comics of the ‘50s and ‘60s, folk-friendly music of the ‘70s and Miami cocaine-busting cops of the ‘80s. Throughout the ‘90s, it also became akin to electronic music through the partnership of mega-super Sasha and Digweed. While the world embraced ‘Sashweed’, another duo began to surface, taking the dance scene by storm.

Pako & Frederik have now been together for more than a decade and are one of the most globally recognised duos in dance music. Maintaining a high and consistent level over that time is never easy, but the boys put it down to one thing, saying “It’s as easy as doing a Volendammer clog dance. As soon as you like doing what you do, all is easy.” While Australia is still waiting for the Volendammer craze to sweep our shores, the boys have been busy tying up a new record for the GU imprint. While the debut was a somewhat-straightforward approach comprising dancefloor-friendly music, this time, they are trying to push the sounds in a new direction, even if it means omitting some songs from the disc. More than anything, it’s about understanding what tracks work and ensuring the message gets across to not only to the listener, but also themselves.

“We had some weird ideas that were not suited for vinyl or 12”, which makes them ideal for an album in a way. Some ideas were way too stupid and had to be ditched because we didn’t ... understand the idea behind them. When we listen to what we made for the upcoming album, we sometimes understand it, which is sufficient. “It will have a strange collection of music on it, some with a Dada approach which makes for interesting listening, some with no bigger ideas behind them, other than ‘It’s just tunes, mate’.”

Electronic music albums never do big numbers, a disappointing reality due to the sub-mainstream nature of the sound. Compounding this is the fact that mixed compilations are inevitably more popular, as most feature the best records from each genre. Pako & Frederik’s debut, ‘Atlantic Breakers’, was not only a must-have album, but also a major foot forward for Global Underground separating from their revered mixed compilation series. However, since the inital artist album release, things have somewhat slowed down, re-inforcing the notion that the dance music world is yet to embrace the non-mixed culture. The duo explain. “The concept of having an artist album as a DJ/producer is still so ‘young’, that it’s hard to tell if anything is suffering at all. In general, dance music never had a big ‘album-culture’. The disco era, for example, left us tons of great singles by various anonymous DJs, but not a lot of albums worth mentioning. “It’s too bad that producers who are into electronica didn’t embrace the artist album a few decades earlier. It will make them think differently about electronica, perhaps just because they’re not restricted to the 125BPM club tempo a 12” requires.”

However, they see it in a positive manner, suggesting that, “One can be quite happy releasing just 12-inches for decades, which is almost unthinkable for traditional pop bands. For them, an albm is the first thing. “It’s clear that a general acceptance of dance music can only help the sales of artist albums and vice versa. Maybe compilations even helped us bridge the gap between releasing 12-inches and releasing an artist album."The experience of releasing an artist album and a multitude of singles, remixes and compilations, Pako & Frederik are in a position to understand what is going to work for budding punters, and last year formed the Sitrep label to not only release music under different guises, but also encourage new talent, including new whiz-kid, TC Maniak. For them, it’s important to promote the new wave."It’s nice to release stuff which has a different approach and feel, also to work with people with a different perspective. In TC’s case, a rather ‘peculiar’ perspective. The guy is way out there and his behaviour shows us not to try to pursue the creating of the next-generation party drug, because it’s quite time-consuming.” I sit here, still wondering what the Volendammer clog dance comprises, and realise the boys have probably seen just about every kind of dance available in the dance music community. They’ve performed at just about every major event the world has to offer. This is, however, something they don’t take for granted, seeing it as a privilege that they get to perform to such a variety of people. “It’s incredible, and a real trip...every time. Sometimes you land at a faraway airport and think, ‘Oh my Gawd.’ I hope these people know about the dance music phenomenon and what we’re about to do here. Then the drive to the middle of nowhere, usually in the dark, trying to communicate with the driver whose only language is...Kribjekstisch, or something...a lot of hassle...we usually just settle with calling out famous Dutch soccer players’ names, which is a truly international language. “As the roads get smaller and darker, you just wanna think another ‘Oh My Gawd!’ Then BLAM! A party with everything sorted and a fully educated crowd that seems to know every track we play, dazzling us with trainspotting trivia. These days with Internet and everything, people all over the world are incredibly well-informed.” Unfortunately, Australia (fluent in English) is yet to get a Pako & Frederik Extravaganza, something the boys hope to remedy soon. “Hope it won’t take too long. It’s one of the few continents that we haven’t visited. We’re dying to see it, and to check if you guys really have barbequed shrimps everyday.”

Presslaboys [a] Presslaboys are Luigi Gori & Omar J Neri. They live in Arezzo, here because they have a study immersed in green and quietness, essential requirement to compose music; even if geographically they are far away from the large musical business centres. In1996 instead, while they were in his basement during a storm, the study got flooded and they looked like homeless people holding all them instruments. Here born Presslab Records & two Years later Presslaboys Team, after various names used before.

Their sounds followed a path determined by the blending of their different experiences as DJs: Luigi with electro 80’, Acid House hints, old school beats, progressive & first house music, Omar, instead, more techno Detroit, First German Minimal Techno and 90’ Progressive Sound, in the past they were strongly attracted by the Eighties dark sound, in all its expressions: Cure, Depeche mode, Bauhaus, 4AD Artists, Kraftwerk, Einesturzende de Nuebaten, a real passion for committed music. All of this of course within those musical expressions that characterised all last decade trail: dance, dub, trip hop and electronics in general. In addition to their passion for music they care also of anything around it; they like minimal design, Bauhaus style, and any graphic art that looks forward. Other things that influenced them came from life events they have experienced and the need to express them and express theirselves at the same time. After important releases in famous Labels as Crosstownrebels, SAW Recordings Baroque Records, and remixes as important Artists they decide to compose their first Album, bring the same name of their most representative productions and sum their concept of music style “Electric Generation”. “The Presslaboys Style” recognized by the most illustrious Djs of the world, is ever composed with a electronic component, also when the electro not was so famous, infact many old releases are actually today and good for the actual music market. Never too much minimal always consistent in their roots, Presslaboys bring from this period important signals and sounds, and try to mix with more varieties of vocal expressions and style.

Danny Lloyd [a] Dj since 1993, he begins his artistic career making soundproofing and pre-listening at great performances of national level. The union of ambient, electro, deep, house, funky sound contaminations creates a unique music style and a very recognizable timbre in the different Dj set he makes. In 1994 he has his first experience as producer composing a track called “The Dream Project” on label ZAC. His need to make music increases through the years and he decides to set up a studio of his own where he can give free play to his imagination In 1999 he starts making ambient, funk, lounge and chillout productions confirming the ability to give his peculiar electronic interpretation In 2002, with the nickname “Twelve”, he produces “Identity” on Presslab Records earning very good reviews from international Djs. The project, with deep sounds and funk fragments, shows so interesting to give rise to the remix by Tony Thomas, included in the official version. In the same year, from the collaboration with Dj Alex V. and Gabriele Sorrentino (guitarist), are born AD/DV (funk) Pharma (pseudo Lounge) and Ukit (Jungle) that are included in many compilations produced by the Tuscan Label Com records. In 2003 the collaboration of Chantal Vanni (voice) joints to the “TWELVE”. He adds a further peculiarity to the tracks “Dream Man” and “David you don’t stop”, making himself appreciated also by a lot of musicians of other sectors. The two tracks are included in many compilations 2004 is a year characterized by the realization of 2 remix of the LP “Desert” by Pietro Riparbelli on “fragments studio”. The collaboration gives birth to a tour in theatres and “social centres”, also recorded for the creation of a DVD.

2005 is a year particularly rich in collaborations with artists and labels. He realizes for Com Record, “Birds”, an ambient track, inserted by Covernjact Records in some foreign compilations. He also works with the electro-ethnic group Tilak to the creation of the experimental track Tika, melting Sitar sounds with Indian vocalism. The piece is very appreciated by different magazines such as movimentoprog, kronic.it, mescalina.it, rockit.it, trax #3, “fuori dal mucchio, mucchio selvaggio “rockerilla n.532, passione alternativa and in the CD of ACID JAZZ Magazine N°105. Another important collaboration is born with the world famous Dj Francesco Farfa to the realization of “Seaside Highways”, a track that will be part of the LP “Human Bridge”. At the same time he carries out researches on the minimal concepts of the sound working together with Andrew Hertz (Andrea B) maintaining the influences of the different styles acquired in time. The experiments on sound are based on a wide concept of balance between frequencies and sensations that brings in 2006 to the decision of putting into practice the research on music, realizing a rmx on Presslab limited in a digital version. The track “Changing my style” & “Lovejuice” RMXS has achieved widespread support overseas, being inserted in charts.

Mas Ricardo a.k.a Ricardo Abenojar,.,has been rocking the Swiss Party and Club Scene with his magical Techno and House DJ sets since the early nineties. He set high new musical standards, especially at the “After Hours” whose fame spread quickly beyond Switzerland’s borders. It was during that time that he and his friends cooked up the idea of establishing a party organization – the famous Tarot family was born. They started with a lot of idealism and passion, and step-by-step, with hard work, they built a strong foundation for a massively successful enterprise that prevailed in the techno scene. Mas Ricardo started out by spinning in a small bar in Zurich’s lively Kreis 4, also known as the worker’s quarter. He quickly achieved fame as DJ and not before long the owners of the legendary Roxy Club in Zurich offered him a spot as resident DJ. During that time the Tarot crew started organizing their first parties, and watched them grow into full-blown mega events. Mas Ricardo, being on the organization team as well as doing gigs as DJ, was on the forefront of all these parties. His name soon got huge recognition, in Switzerland and abroad. The first ever „After Hours“ in Zurich were presented by Tarot in May 1992. After a couple of months they moved to a new location, the Oxa Club, and their fame spread like a whirlwind throughout Europe. Resident DJ mas Ricardo’s striking trance and techno style had a huge impact on the scene. His killer mixing skills as well as the careful arrangement of his sets left an enormous impression on many young DJs and more than one strived to copy him.

Mas Ricardo wasn’t only fascinated by trance and techno but always had an immense love for house. And it was with house that he made his mark in the music business during the past years. His vivid interest in music pushed him constantly to improve and work on his skills and over time he became a highly acclaimed and much respected DJ. All over Switzerland mas Ricardo has been warmly welcomed as either resident or guest DJ. And it didn’t take clubs from other European countries very long to catch on and book the great Swiss vinyl virtuoso as well. During the past couple years mas Ricardo and his studio partner Thomas Noser released many successful CD compilations and noteworthy productions. In addition, he collaborated on several music productions that were released by such labels as Zurichmusic, DJ Beat Records, EMI Electrola, Planet Vision Records Frankfurt, Global Ambition Records Stuttgart, TBA or the Tarot label. Mas Ricardo is happily married to Manon (also a very active DJ) and is the proud father of their daughter and son. Ricardo, originally from Madrid, is one of Switzerland’s 10 most important DJs and there is no doubt that great things can be expected from him and his family in the future. This year, though, the successful artist took his workload down a notch. He pulled out of Oxa, that he co-founded, in order to be able to spend more time with his family and to pursue his own career. In the past couple months he has been concentrating on developing his own Live-DJ-Sets and finding innovative ways to incorporate new technologies. He also doesn’t only play strictly house anymore but mixes it up with fresh progressive and techno.
