Powdered I Ching EP
Stewart Walker [Persona]
10 March, 2008 | 2.11PM- Section: Music Reviews Topics: Beatport Blog
Stewart Walker is one of those under-the-radar techno producers who’s been knocking around for long enough to know what he’s doing, as this classy, distinctive three-tracker neatly proves.
‘The Stiff Materialist’ is impressively complex yet instinctively simple, with gentle shards of melody feeding in and out of ricocheting percussion.
Propulsive without being aggressive, there’s an elegance to Walker’s sound design that sets him apart form his FX-obsessed contemporaries.
Next up, ‘Free Association’ employs a loose-limbed disco groove to support a harmonic progression that’s by turns sweetly melancholic, and strangely angular.
EP closer ‘Mint Tea With Honey’ plays with introspective melodies and lightly-rendered rhythmic layering, and while it’s the deepest track here, it’s still bristling with subdued energy.
Quality sounds from the high-end of modern techno.
