Pocket Piano

Pocket Piano (Joakim Remix)

DJ Mehdi [Ed Banger Records]

Yes, it’s that 10 minute epic, nu disco belter with the infectious piano loop that BBC Radio 1 resident Annie Mac has been bludgeoning our speakers with.

Mehdi’s hook-laden construction has been re-assembled by the nu-disco wonderkid Joakim [a] into a pastiche of separable elements and structures, with an underlying current of progressive space disco.

As well as Annie Mac, unsurprisingly this track has been rinsed by DFA’s Tim Sweeney and with its squelchy bass notes, uplifting piano sequences and synthesized arpeggios, this is a must-own for any nu-disco fanatic.

Yet, leaving the progressive, interstellar disco feel aside, this could also be one of the most addictive tracks of the year.

Stripped down beats and synthesizers revolve around the basic piano chord progression, which takes at least well over a week to shake from your subconscious.

Joakim then splices the track into a cosmic jigsaw puzzle that almost resembles a view of the cosmos.

As you stick the pieces together from start to finish you’re taken through organ driven breakdowns, piano- builds, meandering basslines, spliced-up manic cuts, funky disco house and ultimately a “hands in the air” finale, just as the track brings you to landing at just under ten minutes long.
