Plugged In: Teebs
Plugged In: Teebs
19 January, 2011 | 12.05AMWith Plugged In, our ongoing series in which producers rave about their favorite pieces of gear, most of our subjects have stuck to the analog realm. Radio Slave gave it up for his custom frequency isolator. Simian Mobile Disco busted out some modular synths. But Los Angeles’ Teebs takes us in a different direction—not just analog, but unplugged.
For those who aren’t aware of Teebs’ work, just reflect on the words of Brainfeeder chief Flying Lotus
: “Teebs’ music sounds like an island vacation… [It sounds] the way Avatar looks.”
His style revolves around West Coast hip-hop, dub, and acoustic instrumentation, all woven into a warm blanket of almost ambient sound. He produced his debut album, Ardour, two years ago, while sharing an apartment with FlyLo and Samiyam
. But to find out the real secret behind the album’s production, you’ll have to keep reading.
What’s your favorite studio tool? Is it rare? Custom?
It’s a seed shaker, and it shakes and sounds amazing. Not sure when mine got made, and it’s not so rare either—a bit broken, so I’d say it’s definitely a custom model.

When did you acquire yours? Did you get it new? From a friend, from a flea market?
I bought mine a few years ago from a music shop near my house. It was brand-new and the best out of the bunch that day.
How do you use it and what have you used it on? How does it rate to your other studio items?
It’s on just about every track from my record Ardour.
This is my favorite item in my studio. From the sound it makes to how simple it is. I’m in love with it. Truly in love.
