Plastic House
Plastic House (Phonique Remix)
Kikiorix [Ladies & Gentlemen]
10 August, 2007 | 7.47AMIt’s been a good year for Phonique
, with his excellent album ‘Good Idea’ receiving rave reviews for its smart blend of wonky Chicago acid, shimmering robo-pop and floor-shaking minimal disco.
It’s the ideal time, then, for him to start his own label Ladies & Gentlemen, which has already turned a few heads with its first release from Odessa’s Boris Fox.
This time round, Phonique has headed to Japan for his latest signing, namely Tokyo’s Kikiorix
.
Having dabbled in a little clickiness on a handful of local labels, Kikiorix turns his hand here to sweet, melodic tech-house, with an irresistibly classic-sounding chord pattern nicely balanced by modern pings and pops.
Fresh but with a distinctive hint of disco nostalgia, it’s functional, emotive, and bodes well for this interesting new talent.
Meanwhile, Phonique’s mixes take ‘Plastic House’ further still into heart-warming old-school territory.
The instrumental version strips out virtually all the electronic sounds, replacing the original’s sharp percussion with sprightly disco drums and a loose, highly mix-friendly arrangement.
Once again, it’s those classic stabs that give the track its shimmering, optimistic charms - not even Georg Levin’s impassioned vocal performance on the Lighthouse mix can overshadow their stirring, sun-kissed vibe.
A great release from a label that’ll be well worth watching from now.
