Giorgio Gigli [Mental Groove]
19 September, 2007 | 1.16PM- Section: Music Recommendations
Girogio Gigli’s twinkling, hypnotic vortex is always a pleasurable thing to lose yourself in, and his acclaimed releases on Italy’s Eletronnica Romana and Berlin’s Dumb-Unit inhabit some majestic realm between trance and minimal in a refined, sophisticated style.
Girogio Gigli’s tracks are the sort of the thing that really have to be heard in their entirety to unleash their full power, and even more so if you’re lucky enough to get them on a proper rig; frankly, the clarity, detail and pureness of his endlessly drifting waves of sound demand it.
On ‘High Earth Orbit’, infinite, distant slivers of melody drift back and forth across a sharp kick and oodles of flailing percussive FX, and despite the near-clinical precision and a polished, hyper-electronic feel, there’s still a resolutely organic movement to the track’s ever-unraveling mysteries, ensuring that tedium never sets in.
‘Low Earth Orbit’ opts for a similar approach but employs a darker, heavier touch, with rising, rattling percussive clips bouncing off an insistently punchy kick.
Again, the track folds in upon itself repeatedly as layer after layer of delay continues its exponential outward spiral, proving that truly hypnotic trance music doesn’t have to be a cliché.
Widescreen Italian techno at its best.
