Pixel Girl (Carl Craig Remix)

Lazy Fat People [Planet E Communica...

Writing about how good Carl Craig is seems a bit like saying that humans need air – surely, anyone who’s ever enjoyed electronic music should know by now that he is arguably the master techno producer of all time.

What distinguishes him from so many Detroit veterans, however, is his innate ability to incorporate whatever is going on in “the scene” at any given time and then, almost effortlessly, churn out an anthem that pretty much eclipses everything else out there.

Appealing as much to dour, aging purists as it does to fresh-faced club kids, Craig’s remix of now-defunct duo Lazy Fat People is a masterclass in timeless, spacey techno, like only he can do.

Based around a one note analogue riff, the track pushes and pulls in all the right directions, teasing out a rocket-fueled intro before letting rip with a thundering rhythm section that’s funky, futuristic and guaranteed to cut through on a soundsystem with unparalleled power.

The Lazy Fat People original is perfectly nice, too, but next to Craig, it sounds a little timid by comparison.

In a musical stratosphere that churns out artists and labels at an increasingly relentless rate, one thing’s certain – soon enough, there’ll be a new C2 cut about to drop that shows all the pretenders how it’s really done.
