Pete Tong diary: In freezing Calgary
Pete Tong diary: In freezing Calgary
3 April, 2009 | 11.27AMOn his last stop before Miami, Pete visits its polar opposite in terms of temperature—freezing cold Calgary, Alberta, where he ponders the reality of touring as a DJ and its fleeting and superficial forays into the local culture.
Whiskey Nightclub, Calgary, 25th March 2009
Touring makes you a shallow tourist, as you never really get to know much about where you are or where you’re going.
You think you are going to have all this time to think and explore but in reality you do a lot of packing and unpacking and being chased around the world by your email account and the complexity of time zones.
All you can really do is do your best at the shows. The great thing about playing every day is that you can really work on your set and perfect different combinations and try out new tunes. All good preparation for WMC in Miami.
-6 degrees in Calgary and 40mph winds make for a chilly reception, but I’m told not to moan as this was a good day. They had had a ton of snow in this area and the promoter Mickey is relieved it didn’t snow today.
Respect to the locals as The Whiskey was packed and excited. Not my favourite sound system in North America, but a great night except for the fact that I said, “Hello, Edmonton!” halfway through my set!
Must have been the fact that local hero Luke Morrisson was on stage with me. I corrected myself, but I’m not sure anyone noticed!
2:30am finish and now I’m ready for sunshine so I take the pain, tackle the immigration line and jump on a 7am flight to the Sunshine State… See you there!
