Pendulum loses drum and bass heads, gains US and rock fans

Perth-based drum & bass band Pendulum may have lost some love from hardcore drum & bass heads with their recent mainstream success, but they’ve won over a whole new legion of fans from the rock side of things.

Kerrang! magazine no less, are the latest rock magazine to support the Ear Storm/Atlantic Records group by nominating Pendulum’s ‘Propane Nightmares’ as Best Single in the upcoming Kerrang! Awards.

It’s not hard to understand why head bangers can get into Pendulum’s fast and furious guitar-laced beats as it is aggressive and in-your-face music.

Whilst ‘Propane Nightmares’ smashed its way to the top of the pop charts in Europe, Pendulum have achieved the unthinkable over in the US by getting on-air radio support for their brand of electronic music.

Commercial radio dominates in America, and mainstream radio’s support for dance music is pitiful by comparison to the rest of the world, but college radio stations and Live 105 in San Francisco have been supporting ‘Propane Nightmares’ significantly.

Live 105’s music director Aaron Axelson even raved, “...the song generates a sick reaction with every spin.”

Even MySpace US featured ‘Propane Nightmares’ as a Video Exclusive.

The US-based popularity of Pendulum is now so great, that the band kick started their first-ever ‘Tour of the Americas’ yesterday at Boston’s Middle East, and they will continue to tour throughout October even reaching Baltimore and Atlanta.

Kerrang! summed up Pendulum’s new-found love from the mainstream with, “Pendulum have that intriguing cross-over appeal that will make them superstars.”

Whatever you may think about Pendulum’s style of drum & bass, there’s no denying that the band are on the brink of becoming major dance music stars, perhaps the first group to crossover to the mainstream worldwide since The Chemical Brothers.
