Although his name may not be familiar with some, Kalim Shabazz is a New York institution.
As promoter of Afterlife in the early 1990s, his parties played a key part in the evolution of the city’s dance scene with DJs such as François K gracing the decks.
In ‘Peak Bomb’, he draws influence from both his soulful US house roots and techier European sensibilities to create a fusion worthy of its title.
The first thing that hits you is the driving energy emanating from the chugging percussion and looped keys.
These are eventually engulfed in a blanket of warm pads before the track drops into a lone piano line.
What follows is a peak time onslaught of rumbling bass, skin prickling lead lines and strings which deliver a true hands in the air moment.
On remix duties is Berliner Phonique, who really needs no introduction.
His version retains the energy of the original albeit in an understated tech edged manner.
Echoed screams herald in some of Phonique’s trademark keys and a punchy groove.
However, it’s the use of the Original’s strings which send this soaring into peak time territory.
This is deep house at its emotive best and will appeal to lovers of the Buzzin Fly sound.
