Peace Division On Tsuba - Interview Here
9 May, 2008 | 10.27AM- Section: Music News
2007 saw Peace Division turn in a superb and heavily supported 12” for Crosstown Rebels, as well as impeccable remixes for Audio Soul Project and Kerri Chandler.
2008 sees them kick off a brand new project for Tsuba: Peace Division ‘Presents The Lab’.
Devised as an outlet for deeper, sample-based experiments within house music, The Lab’s first creation is a four track EP for the highly regarded London based imprint.
As you’d expect, the undeniable Peace Division groove which has made PD one of the most respected duos in house music is in full force throughout this EP.
The beat-perfect arrangements that Drake and Henry are known for are here too, but there’s an increased warmth throughout with the use of sparse chords, subtly used samples and gentle layering of sounds.
Tsuba boss Kevin Griffiths got the lowdown on the project from one half of Peace Division, Justin Drake:
What’s the idea behind ‘The Lab’ project?
We’ve been pigeon-holed into a certain style of music over the years which can be frustrating.
Using the Lab as a side project allows us to make music without this restriction.
What can we expect from PD over the coming months?
We’ve put together a new mix album for NRK records which will be released as part of their coast 2 coast series.
Remixes for hyper colour, Viva and Leftroom.
What artists and labels are doing it for you right now?
Serafin, Mollinari, Curly and the Dildo (Peter).
Matt Edwards is also doing some house edged stuff that I like.
Most memorable gig of the last 12 months and why?
Playing in Indonesia last year I had my passport confiscated by immigration.
After a couple of days stuck out there and with some gentle (financial) persuasion they kindly escorted me out of the country under armed guard.
Definitely an experience that I won’t forgot.
