Paul Ritch: Artist of the Week

Paul Ritch: Artist of the Week

French techno is the healthiest it has been in years thanks to homegrown talents like Danton Eeprom, DJ Chloé and Beatportal’s Artist of the Week Paul Ritch [a]. Over the last 12 months Paul Ritch’s records have been caned by all the big techno DJs including Luciano, Richie Hawtin and Sven Väth [check out all his tunes in the player below].

We caught up with Paul Ritch to find out more about his unique production style.

All your tracks have a very unique groove – what’s your theory on good techno beats?

My techno beats must be rolling with a big bass. I like when there is a little and very repetitive element from the start to the end of a track.

But even if it takes up only a very small part in the mix of a track, that repetitive sound is essential. It makes it all!

I also really enjoy rimshots and toms. I work hard to find repetitive patterns with toms and rimshots, but something that doesn’t get boring.

But I’ve always said to myself, there is no rules, no ultimate theory and I like to try things that I didn’t try before.

So where do you get your cool toms and rimshots from?

I use drum samples and drop them into the Ableton Live samplers, Simpler and Impulse.

When I work in Cubase I just drop audio samples on the audio channel.

I sometimes use a synth to make a drum line but if I do this, it’s mostly for claps, snares and hihats.

Are you a hardware or software man?

I don’t use any hardware for now. I use Ableton Live 6 with different plug-ins and sometimes Cubase.

How do you begin when producing a track?

Firstly, I ask myself if I want to do a techno, tech house or deep house record.

And then I begin to build a beat in that direction.

When I get the beat I start working on other loops and then I build the track up. Sometimes I use a MIDI controller to record the track live and then I edit it afterwards.

Your new track ‘Summer Ceremony’ on Resopal Schallware [check it out below] features some cool sound FX – what’s your favourite audio effect/plug in?

My favorite FX plugin is the Ohmboyz Delay.

What bit of studio kit would you really like to own?

I’d like to have Neve EQ and compressor, Lexicon reverb and Studer monitor.

Your tracks have been played by all the big techno DJs like Luciano and Richie Hawtin. How does it feel when big DJs play your music?

When I hear great DJs play my music it makes me happy. It gives me more motivation. I want to produce more and more!
