Pan-Pot [Mobilee]

Pan-Pot’s ‘Black Gold’ album went down a treat with fans of the duo’s stark, archetypically Berliner minimalism, and emerged as one of the minimal techno scene’s most talked about albums of 2007.

Here, the label offers a pair of revisions that widen the appeal, incorporating classic, dub-infused techno influences and a smattering of psychedelic funk, pulling Pan-Pot’s originals out of the minimal quagmire.

Marcus Ressman’s clip-clopping micro-tribalisms on his remix of ‘Ape Shall Never Kill Ape’ are potently trippy, and more in line with Mobilee’s patented stripped-back gloopiness.

Featuring some nicely arranged drops and a thick, resonant kick to pull everything along, it’s perfect for the foggy hours of the morning.

Better still is the version of ‘Crank’ offered up by Bpitch’s Zander VT, who seems to be emerging as something of a hot name in European techno circles.

He spruces up the original into a stylish dub-techno groover, with rolling, tribal flickers underpinned by a classic Basic Channel-style stab.

It’s far from the most innovative track Mobilee have put out, but its attention to groove and spooky detail makes it a fine slice of deep, kinetic techno.

Both are well worth investigating.
