Pacha NY closed by police, reopens days later

New York might like to bill itself as ‘The city that never sleeps’ but anyone who has been involved in the nightlife industry in the city for the last few years will tell you that is a lie.

In reality, New York’s club scene is stagnant with most of the city’s famous clubs and dancing spaces having been shut down by authorities.

Now New York only has a couple of decent clubs worth going to, and even the high profile ones are subject to overzealous police attention as Pacha New York found out two weekends ago.

Marquee club in New York was also closed by police

On Friday 27th June just hours before Pacha was due to open for one of its busiest weekends for Gay Pride, police closed the club stating the Nuisance Abatement Law, which allows cops to close a club after three legal violations.

The club remained close for the whole weekend.

The charge was drugs, but after a court hearing the following week Pacha was allowed to reopen just in time for July 4th. That shows somewhat, that the charges were not very serious and didn’t hold much water.

Pacha NYC refused to comment to Beatportal, but the club must be feeling the bite of such regular police raids (the club was forced to close by police on April 13th 2007).

With over 100 people employed by the club, Pacha can’t afford to miss one weekend of business, let alone one of their busiest weekends.

There are some in the gay community who believe the timing of the raids—Marquee nightclub and Splash Bar in Union Square were also closed—was deliberate, and that the gay community was deliberately targeted.

Certainly closing three of the city’s hotspots before a big party weekend sends out a message of zero tolerance.

A unnamed source told Beatportal: “These raids happens once or twice a year and it’s a way for the police to send out a message - the message that they’re in charge.”
