Pac Man
John Keys [Triebstoff]
25 November, 2008 | 7.44PMTriebstoff has long held a reputation for high-quality, groove-heavy techno and tech-house - indeed, the label was the first to be distributed by electronic behemoth Kompakt
, nearly ten years ago.
This new outing from ‘John Keys’ is in fact the work of Chilean masters Dandy Jack
and Andre Garcia, who last popped up together on Crosstown Rebels
with the excellent ‘Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Tsedong?’.
The title track is the one here, with richly textured synths drifting amiably across a bubbling, streamlined groove.
Deep enough for the warm ups and afterhours, but glowing with a perky warmth, it’s less fussy than some of the pair’s previous works, and all the better for it.
Meanwhile, flipside ‘Inland Empire’ takes a more angular, unsettled approach, working vaguely abrasive analogue tones over a cranky, scraping beat.
It’s not quite as mind-blowing as the surreal David Lynch film it was presumably named after, but nonetheless, offers a darker alternative to Pac Man’s easy-going charms.
Solid gear from Triebstoff’s ongoing South American connection.
