Organic music served up proper, by Mathias Kaden

Organic music served up proper, by Mathias Kaden

If you’re a fan of organic sounding minimal techno with a large dose of percussion then you’ll be eagerly awaiting the next release to come out by Mathias Kaden [a] in the next year on his label, Vakant [l].

This is not fast food style, disposable empty calorie music, but instead it’s nutritious and long-lasting.

In addition to his stellar and well-thought out productions, Kaden also has the admirable skill of creating good vibes wherever and whenever he puts his creative energy behind the turntables.

During Mutek festival Mathias Kaden gave people a reason to take notice of his productions.

He and Onur Özer tag-teamed outdoors on a rainy day and, despite the more than dreary weather, got the crowd into the mood of festivity.

In the auditory memory of many people, the deep impression of Mathias Kaden’s sound has lasted.

His signature sound has been coined as the epitome of the ‘minimal samba’ style, which he explains came out of a tongue in cheek make-believe genre.

He explained, “At the beginning it was more of a joke, but in the end it has become true.”

“I use a lot of subtle African grooves mixed with minimal tech-house.

‘I really love the African culture and a lot of Latin rhythms.

“Maybe my inspiration comes also from my travels in other countries.”

One look at Mathias’ tour schedule reveals that he has indeed traveled afar.

Although Mathias does admit that he uses samples sometimes in the African language, he doesn’t reveal where exactly he gets them from.

He does reveal however, something about the way he creates his music:

“I wish that I could sing in an African language, but I can’t.

"I use Logic and Ableton to produce my music, but I have a lot of hardware.

"I’m not a big fan of using plug-ins.”

He’s a musician who brings together seemingly incompatible opposites.

Organic and technical at the same time and in parallel fashion, his music is both digital and analogue.

Lately his work in the studio has consisted mainly of remixes, but his latest original EP, ‘Lucindas’ out on Freude Am Tanzen, was produced in February 2008.

Regarding ‘Lucindas EP’, Mathias enthused, “Lucindas is a mix between mystic and positive feelings and vibration.

“For me it’s the perfect representation of my ‘minimal samba’ style, where rhythm and minimal music come together for the dance floor.”

He continued, “This year I’m planning a new EP for my Vakant label and next year my first album!

“After the summer I’ll start to do music for my new EP.

“But the sound will be different from my last releases.”

Surprises abound… and no doubt the production process will be organic, so there’s no telling what sounds he’ll be creating the next time around.
