Ora Recordings Q10: Gabriel Batz

Ora Recordings Q10: Gabriel Batz

Every week an Ora Recordings artist will answer questions part of the Q10 interview.

This week: Gabriel Batz.

1) Tell us more about yourself. Where are you from?
Well I’m a Montreal native with Guatemalan blood. I used to be a tennis player now I’m in music.

2) How long have you been involved with music?
I’ve been making music for ten years but I have been releasing records for almost three years now.

3) How did you get started in music?
I got into electronic music through DJ Shadow and DJ Cam. Not the kind of style I do but they inspired me to start making music.

4) Who are your influences or your favourite artists?
I’m a huge Oasis fan. However, Agoria, Depeche Mode, Dead Can Dance, The Tea Party, Mateo Murphy and Tiga have influenced me as an artist and have made an impact on my sound.

5) Tell us about your relationship with Ora Recordings.
I own and operate Ora Recordings. It used to be a sub label to Elektrofone Records until they closed down in the fall of this year. Since September, Ora Recordings has been fully independant with distribution done by UK distributor Label-Worx.

6) What studio gear do you use in order to create your music?
I can’t live without Ableton Live. It is my main tool. 100% of what I do is done in Ableton. It accelerates the production process as it treats audio like a rubber band. I can play around with tempo all depending on my state of mind. It really is amazing.
Once I finish a track I test it out through my Rane MP2016 as it mimics the sound of a pre-amp.

7) Do you rely on software or hardware?
I use both. I also use a Access Virus Classic synth. I also have a bunch of guitars for whenever i need them.

8) In what direction do you see the music industry going in the next years?
All digital.  Alot of vinyl distributors have closed down. I discovered that Neuton from Germany is closing down. The end is near for music in physical format.

9) What are your views and opinions on downloads and file sharing?
I honestly think it’s something you have to accept and live with. In the end it is all about promotion. Your music and your tracks will get your name out there. After all, that is the purpose of releasing good music.

10) What are you future music plans (gigs, radio shows, releases, current projects)?
I have a weekly radio show called Reves Numeriques exclusively on ETN.FM. I have releases coming out soon on Alter-Ego Records from the UK and on Really Really Big Records from Russia. Other than that I will focus more on my label Ora Recordings. I started a new label called Ikiru Recordings. I will mostly release my own music on that label. I felt trapped with the progressive trance genre that I felt the need to explore other styles like house, tech-house, minimal and chillout. Hopefully it can make me grow as an artist.
