Ora Recordings Q10: Daniel Wanrooy

Ora Recordings Q10: Daniel Wanrooy

Every week an Ora Recordings artist will answer questions part of the Q10 interview.

This week: Daniel Wanrooy.

1) Tell us more about yourself. Where are you from?
I am Daniel Wanrooy [a], also known as part of “Progression”, “Odyssee” and a few releases as “Inbox”. I am from a place in the south west of Holland, called Dordrecht. It’s like 20 minutes from Rotterdam by car, at least, as you drive by nighttime. With trafficjams it’s like 1 hours. I was born there as well, the 25th of July 1978. It was hot that day…

2) How long have you been involved with music?
It’s been a long time for sure, it was around when I was 14 when I came in contact with the first music programms, it was more creating noise then making music then. But when I was able to create my first “music”, I was addicted for sure… it’s still one of my favorite things in the world.

3) How did you get started in music?
Well, I explained a little in the former question, but it was around the age of 14 when a friend of mine got his first modem, it took ages to download a 300kb music programm and he told me we should try it. A week later and a huuuuuuuge telephone bill for his parents the 300kb’s where in and we were ready to install!!! It’s was amazing, we had like 20 samples, and we could create something… whohoooooo!

4) Who are your influences or your favourite artists?
All kinds of music are inspiring to me for sure! But I love the ones especially with different styles, like Bjork, one of my favorites. And with EDM I absolutely love Ferry Corsten, he does everything by himself, which is amazing with such a busy schedule. Also Sasha has his own sound which is awesome to me. But at the moment there are a lot of talented guys out there… I see new names each day.

5) Tell us about your relationship with Ora Recordings.
I know Gabriel Batz [a] from his productions for a long time, I used to play his track “Fendahl” a lot as Progression. We came in touch through myspace and that when he told me about his label Ora Recordings [l]. Because we both have the same passion for music we tried to come with a collab, which was interesting because we actually live at the other side of the world, and we both use different programms (...and no, I don’t use the downloaded programm from 16 years ago anymore) but it worked out pretty well imo. Cool that our track has been played in ASOT by Armin. Gabriel is a cool guy and I wish him all the best with his label, I am sure it will be a success for him!

6) What studio gear do you use in order to create your music?
I use mostly Reason to produce and recently Ableton as well. Of course a midi keyboard to play my melodies and basslines and stuff.... For monitors I have Genelecs 8030a.

7) Do you rely on software or hardware?
I always relied on software, but that was because I just couldn’t afford any hardware when I was a student. When I had more money to spent, software was as good as hardware so I stayed with the software.

8) In what direction do you see the music industry going in the next years?
Hmmm good one. We all see the that sales are decreasing unfortunately… Vinyls are not affordable for labels anymore to produce because of that. So it will be more and more digital. I don’t know what’s is gonna happen next, maybe the digital sales will increase or they stabilize and the labels have to search for another solution again. Really can’t tell you. Of course as a producer I hope it will increase, because I need food as well… :)

9) What are your views and opinions on downloads and file sharing?
Well of course I regret it. How could I see otherwise. But we just can’t complain, as many artists say, it sucks for the income of course, but you can be famous in a few weeks now also because of the internet. It’s like my pet “Max”, it’s a chinchilla. I bought it and I have loads of fun with it, but meanwhile he ruined my skirtings. You understand?? No? Me neither…

10) What are you future music plans (gigs, radio shows, releases, current projects)?
I am always full of plans. I just keep on producing music and I love to do that. The more people see my name and hear my tracks, the more bookings I will get eventually I guess. So basicly producing music is the fundament of what I will proceed. I found myself a new management (www.Tangled65.com) lately and I am really happy with them, we collaborate really well together and a lot of things are coming up in 2009, so stay tuned and I hope to see you all soon somewhere around the globe.
