Ora Recordings Q10: Bobby Savage
Ora Recordings Q10: Bobby Savage
8 April, 2010 | 2.37AMEvery month an Ora Recordings
artist will answer questions part of the Q10 interview.
This month: Bobby Savage.
1) Tell us more about yourself. Where are you from?
Real name is Bobby Day, orignally from Newmarket, Ontario but I moved to Montreal about 4 years ago. I produce under a few different aliases, Bobby Savage, shallowgrave, B&G and Bobby Savage Pres. Solitude.
2) How long have you been involved with music?
Since early 1998 I believe. Professionally maybe since 2006ish when Barry Rooke (DJ Ampz) of Toronto based Label 4play Trax picked up my first EP “Eff This Place” for release.
3) How did you get started in music?
A good friend of mine showed my a program sometime in 1998 called ImpulseTracker, I didn’t think much of it at the time, but I started to download a lot of music files and dissected how they were created. I always loved the whole ‘demo’ scene which combined these SIDchip type tunes and early 3D videos. Eventually after collecting a lot of tracks by other producers I took a shot at making my own. It was always just a hobby until sometime in 2003 when a few friends pushed me to take it to the next level.
4) Who are your influences or your favorite artists?
I grew up listening to a lot of the pioneers of EDM. My good friend and I would go to the local music store and browse through their “Elektronika” section. Since we didn’t know much about the artists and had no way of finding out, we’d just buy CD’s based on their artwork or how many tracks were on the disc. I remember hearing guys like Underworld, Leftfield, Fluke, Orbital, FSOL and really being inspired by the stuff they were creating. Nowadays I draw influence from a lot of sources, I go through phases of wanting to hear everything new coming out and then not wanting to hear anything at all. This industry is constantly moving.
5) Tell us about your relationship with Ora Recordings?
I’d seen Gabriel Batz play a few times at Stereo here in Montreal but never met him personally. He contacted me shortly after my first shallowgrave EP came out on 4play Trax, “The Life You Left Behind”. He asked me to come spin with him at a local club. He’s a great guy, down to earth and willing to go the extra mile for his artists. I’ve done a remix for the label and now had 2 tracks released under my Bobby Savage Pres. Solitude alias.
6) What studio gear do you use in order to create your music?
I work off a PC based DAW running ProTools and Ableton Live.
7) Do you rely on software or hardware?
Hardware when I can get my hands on it, but for the bulk my productions I rely on my software. Post processing and mastering, depending on the track, might be done involving some out of the box hardware but I’ve always been mostly software based.
8) In what direction do you see the music industry?
Bigger and bigger I guess, just look at the events related to EDM in North America, attendance seams to be getting higher every year. Personally I’ve been listening to EDM since 1996ish so I’ve gone through a lot of the rise and fall of different “sub-genres”. The music and the techniques behind it are always evolving in some way. A lot of people complain about the commercialization of it all which can be annoying at times, but I feel there will always be and underground aspect to it.
9) What are your views and opinions on downloads and file sharing?
I really don’t think it’s an issue anymore, maybe back in 2001-2003 when iTunes was just coming out and before that when CD sales took a massive dive, but I think everything has changed since then. People get their music through the internet now and file sharing is always going to be around in some form. Let’s just hope enough people support the music to keep up the quality of the productions being released.
10) What are you future music plans (gigs, radio shows, releases, current projects)?
I’ve got a few projects on the go right now. I’m working with a good friend of mine Greg Pidcock (Gred Pidc**k) on a project we started called B&G. We’ve got a few tracks planned for release this year on the label he manages, Bad Pony Records (Owned by Tone Depth). I just finished a track which is coming out on Bad Pony Records under Bobby Savage called “Hippopotamaus”. I remixed Loverush UK!’s classic “Different World” which should be due out some time this summer (2010). I’m also working closely with Gabriel Batz on a new project which is starting to take shape, and I’m attempting to finish a full artist album for my shallowgrave project.
