Omnisphere ships!

Omnisphere ships!

To say that Spectrasonics’ Omnisphere software synth has generated a big buzz would be sheer understatement.

Designed by Eric Persing – the man behind the Roland sound from 1984 to 2005 and frankly, one of the best sound designers in the known universe – Omnisphere really does represent years of development.

Omnisphere’s sounds are based on a 50GB sample library created specifically for the device.

Here’s a quote from the press release:

“Spectrasonics has pioneered several brand-new types of sampling for the core library of this instrument, including unique ‘Psychoacoustic’ sounds and soundsources created with a new composite morphing technique (CMT), which morphs the harmonic characteristics of one instrument to another. As a bonus, a section of the core library is also devoted to representing the best of Spectrasonics award-winning sample libraries.”

That alone would be enough reason to check out this synth, but from there Spectrasonics throws in a bevy of extraordinary synthesis tools:

- Waveshaping
- Granular synthesis
- Timbre shifting
- FM
- Polyphonic ring modulation
- High-resolution streaming sample playback
- Dual multimode filter structure
- Chaos envelopes
- Modulation routing system
- Advanced arpeggiators (based on Stylus RMX)
- Integrated effects

With all this power, it’s pretty easy to get lost in the possibilities, especially if you’re new to sound design.

Fortunately, Omnisphere includes multiple editing modes that range from beginner to way, way advanced.

If all of this geekery captures your attention, then head over to Spectrasonics’ teaser area for the full monty.
