Oi Oi Oi Remixed

Siriusmo, Feadz, DJ Maxximus, A-Tra...

The hotly anticipated ‘Oi Oi Oi Remixed’ album on BoysNoize deserves an extended review.

It’s stuffed to the gills with electronica and electro house explosives, ready to detonate at any minute.

The unpronounceable Siriusmo from Germany has had ‘& Down’ remixed by BoysNoize to dangerous results.

You always know that BoysNoize are going to come hard with distorted effects, and on this mix they don’t disappoint, bringing their rusted sonic cannons into the fray and obliterating listeners with audio grapeshot.

It’s a serrated, wall-of-sound remix that has holes blown through it by heavily compressed, bumbling drums.

You can actually get away with listening to this at home - one of the keys to the BoysNoize ethos - but on a dance floor (especially when you’ve had too much and it’s about 2:30 a.m.) it’ll keep you rocking and swaying (hopefully into the chesty blonde you could swear has been grinding you from in front).

Don’t miss out on this filthy track-of-the-moment.

Next up is the Feadz Aval Aval Remix of ‘Lava Lava’, which lives up to its name by sounding like (and probably looking like, if you close your eyes) a volcano erupting whilst on acid.

Not that we know what it’s like to do acid ... or mushrooms ... or sugarfree Redbull.

The track progresses into an addictively stuttered and filtered thumper, oozing funk and good times.

It might be a little too full-on for some, but the quality of its production is overwhelmingly evident.

Next comes DJ Maxximus, who remixes ‘The Battery’.

This is maniacal electro if there ever was some, conjuring images of a killer clown with blood dripping from its mouth, getting closer and closer behind you on a demonic carousel.

We’re not too sure what DJ Maximmus was taking when he made this rather scary composition.

It would be a perfect addition to the soundtrack of a modern, urban horror film and its unintelligible, grime style MCing hits the mark with freaky precision.

‘Oh!’ by A-Trak is a beautifully clean Daft Punk-style remix built around funky house bass, vocodered lyrical slurs and ‘90s hardcore samples.

If you were to demo this album to someone who didn’t know anything about electronica or electro house, then this is the track to play them.

Vocoders always sound superb inside dance music, and the ‘Oh!’ remix is no exception to this rule.

It’s one of the best of the bunch.

Onto track number six, and ‘Let’s Buy Happiness’ is a sharp, scarring creation whose name will be understood by those venturing into shady clubland on a regular basis.

Proxy has done a superlative job here, having created some futuristic-sounding synths and effects that other producers will surely admire.

Para One has a go at remixing ‘Lava Lava’ - it’s all wobbly LFO-processed oscillations, massively compressed drums and funky bass.

It can’t beat the Feadz Remix though!

Moving forward, Appart’s attempt at remixing ‘Shine Shine’ results in a curious, alien-sounding track, boasting a moorish, distorted, thinned-out lead that buzzes away like a glow worm leading you through a mysterious, dark valley.

The pads and drifting synths that hover around sound like a Godly choir, and they grab the listener and hold them tight.

This is by far the most story-telling piece on the ‘Oi Oi Oi Remixed’ LP - it represents a sonic journey, so why don’t you put on your headphones and tread its path?

‘Don’t Believe The Hype Surkin Remix No. 2’ doesn’t have a Flava Flav sample in sight, or an appreciation of short names.

It’s a garish mix of high-mid, phased synths that fizz in the face of the listener through most of its duration.

It even sounds a bit like ‘Chemical Beats’ by The Chemical Brothers on the Wipeout PlayStation1 game.

It might not be dynamic enough, but the pads in ‘Don’t Believe The Hype’ sure are nice.

The penultimate download on the ‘Oi Oi Oi Remixed’ LP is called ‘Frau feat. I-Robots’ PYZIQUe Remix - a deep, cinematic treat with ass-shakin’ bass and some German vocals.

Despite the fact that The Last Real DJ Alive knows some German, he can’t even make out the basic statement made here.

Moving swiftly on to the final track, we have the Proxy remix of ‘Don’t Believe The Hype’.

The best has been saved for last - let’s put it that way.

Sometimes you are exposed to dance music so satisfyingly well-meshed and devastating that you’ll love it on the first listen.

And this is the case with Proxy’s remix.

DON’T miss it.
