NYC Review: DirectDrive at Sullivan Room
3 January, 2008 | 10.05AM- Section: Music News
In preparation for last night’s DirectDrive party, I took a long nap. My partner D and I have outgrown the midnight-to-daylight scene here in Gotham. That is to say, we’re older and wider now and we tire easily. Hence the nappage.
We arrived bright-eyed and bushy-tailed at the velvet ropes. I whipped out my credit card as evidence of our on-line ticket purchase, but (oh my god!) discovered that I hadn’t been given the secret handshake superspy code that everybody else had.
Awkward, needless to say. But finally, we were deemed harmless and allowed to descend to the Sullivan Room.
The team spinning classic drum & bass on the DJ dias soon soothed our shaky nerves.
Who can resist twitching ecstatically to the sound of turbo snares?
With all the whooshes and swells you couldn’t help feeling that you’d been sucked into a turbine engine. Wicked awesome!
Then headliner Adam F took the controls [check his beats in the player below].
It’s not that he banished melody altogether, but there was a definite shift to 200 proof, bone-cracking kick and nasty-ass bass.
On a foray to the bar, D observed a young lady texting her friends that DirectDrive was too hardcore and they should find another scene. Yeah baby!
We moved up towards the decks to watch the man work.
I have no idea what he was doing. Lots of buttons and flashing lights. He was super cute doing it, though.
By the time Adam F wrapped up, even our gonads were vibrating.
DirectDrive has been hosting Jungle D & B in New York City for about eight years now, at a number of subterranean and above-ground venues.
If you’re looking for authenticity and audio-amphetamine in the Big Apple, DirectDrive is a good thing.
