NYC: Eric Kupper @ Naima

Some sound waves are so beautiful they hurt. Escalating, spiraling in frequency to the limits of our perception, they make us whisper, “hurt me, baby”.
Or maybe that’s just me.
I was feeling it, during one of Eric Kupper’s many brilliant transitions last night at Naima.
While the dance professionals on the floor awaited the dramatic return of the sternum-rattling 4/4 beat, I lost myself in the LFOs and the pitch-bends and the comb filters.
After a couple of decades producing some of the hottest tracks in pop and electronica, the versatile Mr. Kupper got the urge to spin and is now a resident DJ with the London-based Fierce Angels.
It could be the tequila/wine/prosecco/limoncello talking, or it could really be that Kupper’s set was the baddest-ass tribal Latin breaks electro house ever.
We snuck in the front door early to sample Naima’s Italian menu. Excellent. Outstanding.
Not to mention, there’s something special about a dancefloor saturated with aerosolized white truffle oil.
The party announcement had promised “no f@#king bottle service!!!!”.
Yeah, right. I spotted a couple of litres of mineral water being passed around. Oh, those don’t count?
The camera-friendly and congenial crowd didn’t seem to mind one way or another. I hope their hipness rubbed off on me a little ....
Nota bene: Relatively speaking, it is now morning.
My cranium is a tuning fork in a very noisy world.
And Kupper’s set is still the baddest-ass tribal Latin breaks electro house ever.
