NYC: Dennis Ferrer and Martinez Bros at Pacha

To tell the truth, I didn’t have as great a time as I thought I would last Friday night at PachaNYC. Maybe my stars were out of alignment.

The music was phat, the club was boss, and the crowd was hott. But somehow my spirits were, well, dispirited. Kinda like a weak but pricey well drink.

Mr. Ferrer was just setting up his laptop when I found an observation post on the mezzanine. He runs Vista (gasp!).

My night vision is less than acute, but the audio software he was using might have been VirtualDJ.  At a distance I first took the blue band scrolling across the top of the laptop screen to be a stock ticker.  What a downer!!

On closer inspection (using a friend’s more reliable eyeballs) it turned out to be the waveform for an audiotrack.  Super neato .... gotta love the gear.

Dennis wore his headphones back-to-front above his ears like Caesar’s laurel wreath.  I thought that very fashionable.

And there is no question that he has conquered an empire when it comes to dance music.  When ‘Touched the Sky’ started up, the dancefloor at PachaNYC went wild.

I personally prefer ‘Son of Raw’ and ‘Black Man in Space’, but it’s all good music.  Amazingly good.

When the brilliant young Martinez Bros joined Dennis at the decks, all of their fans on the mezzanine started buzzing.  Much excitement, and for good reason ... Chris and Steve Jr. were stepping up for their main floor debut.

They did not disappoint.  The crowd was digging the groove and even with my stars out-of-whack I managed a little happy dance.

But here’s the thing.  What I remember most about the evening were congas, divas, and an air horn that just wouldn’t quit.  I wanted to yell ‘stop yanking on that cord, for crying out loud!’.

I kept waiting for a transition that would give me chills.  What I heard was either one of two flavors:  the ‘dramatic pause’, or the ‘buzzsaw screeching its way into high frequency infinity’.

I’m not a critic, I’m just an observer.  And I’m more than willing to listen again.
