Nu rave hits China
21 June, 2007 | 8.10AMDespite the Klaxons
having declared that nu rave is a “joke that got out of hand”, the trend for fusing rock & roll and dance music has made it all the way to China.
Some entrepreneurial promoters in the capital city of Beijing are set to stage the country’s first ever nu rave club night.
Their Pingpong event (a name which is supposedly meant to reflect the back and forth relationship between electronic music and rock) at Arena on June 30th will help accustom Chinese ears to the concept of merging the two genres.
Up and coming Chinese bands from China - Queen Sea Big Shark, Supermarket and Huzi will showcase their joint love for rock and electronic sounds on the night, before NYC DJ Arthur Baker
takes over.
“The dance scene is now established in Beijing,” Paul Wong, organiser of the Pingpong event told the China Daily newspaper.
“It’s surprising that no one has tapped into this trend before but it’s what myself and [Chinese promoter] Neebing are into right now and we want to bring it to Beijing.
“It’s fitting that Arthur should spin at this gig for us as he produced ‘Planet Rock’ by Afrika Bambaataa - the first ever electronic rap record.”
