Abicah Soul turns in a slightly disappointing pair of remixes here of UPZ’s ‘Noiz’.

Disappointing all the more considering the very fine remix he and Dennis Ferrer fashioned of Telopopmuzik’s ‘Love Can Damage Your Health’, also released through Objektivity, earlier in the year.

Both of the tracks are particularly deep and moody examples of the classic, old-school Chicago sound we all know and love.

Apart from some extracted vocal phrases on the ‘Abicah Soul Jah Mental Mix’, the two versions are extremely similar so we’ll address the situation as a whole.

The main problem lies in an unfocused melodic groove, with lumps of string and synth being fired at the listener from every angle.

The heavy kick/snare/bass combination does lock you in, but it feels lost amongst all the action that takes place in the frequencies above it.

It is refreshing to hear a producer attempting to employ some musical development over the course of a record (amongst a sea of loop-focused House music on the market) it’s just not a trick that is quite pulled off.

To be fair to Mr. Soul, the attained standards on the label thus far do command a dizzyingly high level of quality; it’s just that the level is, unfortunately, not matched on this occasion.
