2 March, 2010 | 9.10AMInterview with Tim Baker
in support of his new album, “Dreams of Fuzzy Animals and Robots” for Elephanthaus Records Out now exclusively on Beatport.
1. How long have you been producing/djing and describe your style?
I’ve been djing forever, 20+ years and producing for nearly half of that
time. I would describe my style as techno: all forms good.
2. How has your style progressed over the years and evolved to your newest
album?
I think as I’ve gotten older my style and sound has gotten smoother. I
really put a lot of thought and energy into the tracks I produce now.
3. When and where was Elephanthaus Records started?
I started the label in !997 when I was still living in Detroit.
4. How did you come up with the title “Dreams of Fuzzy Animals and Robots”?
It was actually from my 4yr old son as he was sleeping one night I was awakened
by the sound of him laughing. The next morning I asked him if he remembered
what he was dreaming about and he told me a story about these robots being
bothered by fuzzy animals...I just thought how wonderful it must be to
have your mind so free of the world’s problems and just dream ing of things like
that.
5. What was your first musical experience that inspired you and fueled your
passion for electronic music?
I always enjoyed music and my family always danced at functions so it came
natural to me. But, I really feel break dancing helped guide me toward
where I am today.
6. What other projects are you currently working on?
I have a new live act called District 909 with Spanish producer HD
Substance. This is a machine only no computer live set, lots of vocals a
true electronic live act. No abelton, no laptop, just soul.
8. What is Techno to you and how did your being from Detroit influence you?
The Detroit techno sounds has been tracked back too many. Mojo, Juan Atkins
& UR. But to me it is the spirit that the sound possesses and the empowerment
it can bring to large groups of people.
9. How would give a new producer advice about trying to make it in this
industry using only five words?
“Always make music for yourself”
