Argy [Liebe Detail]
22 August, 2007 | 4.43PMThe Liebe Detail
mother label covers all bases from dry minimal to storming big room techno, but their Spezial offshoot appears to be concentrating on a more specific, house-orientated style.
What with updated takes on classic Chicago and New York rhythms emerging as the big sound this summer, it’s proved to be a shrewd move, with Jerome Sydenham’s punching take on Poker Flat prodigy Argy receiving extensive caning by everyone from Michael Mayer to Claude Von Stroke.
Combing tight, straight line drums, cavernous reverbs, and a nagging Lil Louis-style organ lead, it really takes off when the huge bassline dramatically drops a third of the way in.
Reverential enough for the purists, sharp enough for the modernists, and tinged with just the right amount of melodic joy for everyone else, it’s quite possibly Liebe*Detail’s most accessible, anthemic release so far.
Argy’s original is even more blatant in its old-school inclinations, with firing congas, wailing horns and that pesky organ riff sounding like its straight out of New York circa 1993.
Finally, bonus track ‘Tool’ is a little superfluous, but it matters not – the glorious, pompous thump of the Sydenham remix more than makes up for it.
