Nicolette ‘No Government’ rises

Nicolette’s ‘No Government’ was originally signed to Gilles Peterson’s influential Talkin’ Loud label back in the 1990s.

Nicolette [a] was a former Massive Attack vocalist who sung on ‘Three’ and ‘Sly’ on the Bristol group’s groundbreaking ‘Protection’ album.

Back in 1995, the label couldn’t be touched, but with roster of acts that included 4Hero, Nuyorican Soul, Galliano, Incognito, UFO and Roni Size, certain artists often got lost in the hectic schedules.

The UK singer/songwriter of Nigerian parentage has a most unique and distinct vocal, known for her distinctive sensual, childlike voice, she has been described as “Billie Holliday on acid” in the past.

One listen to the remixed reissue on Germany’s Great Stuff underscores that even more with Vienna’s G-Stone artists and hot upcoming producer and DJ-duo Makossa & Megablast tweaking the 808s and 303s set to acid overload, while Tocadisco employs a more prog-meets-techno route with the Hammond organ firing some neat rearguard action against the strings.

We also hear that Nicolette is currently in the studio working on a follow up to 2005’s ‘Life Loves Us’ album.
