New Skank EP

New Skank EP

Wbeeza [Third Ear]

The sophisticated deep house grooves on ‘New Skank EP’ are not ones you’d normally associate with Bermondsey, South London, which is home to the hardest football fans that ever lived (Miiiillwaaaallll). But the second EP from 23-year-old Warren Brown aka Wbeeza [a] is just as likely to cause a crowd scuffle.

Third Ear [l] are touting Wbeeza as the hottest newcomer to UK house music since, well, ever. But whilst Wbeeza’s first EP ‘Heavy Stuff’ in April last year hinted at raw talent, it failed to deliver the kind of clubland recognition that Third Ear might have hoped for (it might have been the rather mundane artwork).

‘New Skank EP’ however is surreptitiously brilliant, underhandedly groovy and downright funky. The jazzy undertones on ‘Roks Dogg’ invoke a kind of ecclesiastical appreciation for its toughly filtered drums and wonky key hits, building anticipation through clever drum patterns and imaginative FX placements. It has a similar vibe to Rhadoo and Luciano’s St Germain ‘Rose Rouge’ remix from 2007, which was genius.

‘Hurricane’ then takes the EP in a totally fresh direction, with a quirky acid bassline gorgeously juxtaposed against a sultry female vocal and drifting pad lines. Lounge-friendly house music doesn’t get much better.

There’s dub vocals on ‘War Fear’ that are backed up by a chunky house loop, and finally ‘He So Crazy’ is low-slung deep house cut that oozes with the feeling of late night cocktails.

All in all, this is one helluva accomplished EP for a pip squeaking young gun. He may be new, but skanky he ain’t.
