New Labels Alert: Monkeytown, In My Room, Teardrop, Nouveau Niveau

Once again, we bring you a roundup of some of the most recent additions to Beatport’s roster of labels. Some of these are brand-new imprints from established figures in the scene; some of them come from dark horses just coming out of the gate. And, occasionally, we’ll be shouting from the rooftops that, at long last, we’ve signed up one of the few labels that we haven’t previously offered.

This month we profile Modeselektor’s new Monkeytown imprint, Trentemoller’s In My Room, Vincenzo and Lovebirds’ Teardrop, and Tom Novy’s Nouveau Niveau Records.

Monkeytown Records

Launched in 2009, Modeselektor‘s Monkeytown Records rapidly accelerated through 2010, building up to Modeselektion Volume 01, a showcase of cuts from an unlikely and international crew: Siriusmo [a], SBTRKT, Feadz [a], Robag Wruhme [a], 2562 [a], Shed [a], Cosmin TRG [a], Digital Mystikz [a], and even Marcel Dettmann [a]. It’s hard to put your finger on what makes it all makes sense—the artists on Monkeytown come from a variety of scenes, from dubstep to techno, and none are necessarily “crossover” artists. But Modeselektor’s penchant for smart, powerful, unconventional dance music shines through across all the label’s releases, charting fantastically fertile movements in dance music that, so far, are outstripping most critics’ abilities to pigeonhole them.

Latest release: Modeselektion Vol. 01 (Bonus Tracks & Versions), featuring cuts from Falty DL, Vaghe Stelle, Love Operation, Bok Bok, and Cosmin TRG.

In My Room

Trentemoller [a] first found favor with punchy, minimal anthems like “Polar Shift” and “Sunstroke,” and he showed his musical range on the album The Last Resort; this year, with Into the Great Wide Yonder, he realized his increasingly panoramic ambitions with a rich blend of electronics, songwriting and rock instrumentation. Along with the album comes In My Room, a new label whose name might be hermetic, but whose output is anything but, with floor-oriented mixes trading off with Trentemoller’s expansive, home-listening productions. In 2010, the label released three singles in addition to the album, featuring remixes from the likes of Gui Boratto [a], Thomas Schumacher [a], Kollektiv Turmstrasse [a], and Pantha Du Prince [a].

Latest release: Silver Surfer, Ghost Rider Go!!!, an epic rock ‘n’ roll adventure featuring remixes from Trentemoller, Andrew Weatherall and Lulu Rouge & Abdullah S.

Teardrop

Vincenzo [a] and LovebirdsTeardrop label doesn’t exactly overflow. Launched in 2008 with Lovebirds’ “Gentle” EP, featuring an Ian Pooley [a] remix, they turned out just two records in 2009: Vincenzo’s “The Hangover” EP, featuring an Office Gossip rework, and Vincenzo and Lovebirds’ “M.U.S.I.C.,” with a Fred Everything mix. Since last November, we hadn’t heard anything more about the label—until last month, when they snuck out Lovebirds’ “Love and Happiness,” a welcome return to their deep-house sound, full to bursting with tone and emotion. Of special note is the way that almost all of Teardrop’s releases include one slower, R&B-flavored track, making these excellent choices for opening sets, lounge gigs and afterhours.

Latest release: Lovebirds, ”Love and Happiness,” also featuring the vocal cut “The Rain,” plus an instrumental version and a Steve Bug [a] remix.

Nouveau Niveau Records

The newest arrival in our round-up this month is, appropriately, Tom Novy [a]‘s Nouveau Niveau, also the name of his longtime artist agency. The label sprang into being back in October with the release of Tom & Jerry’s “Deep in My Soul,” a techy, progressive anthem featuring the vocalist Loredana and a cavalcade of filter sweeps. Since then, they’ve turned out four more singles: Toni del Gardo’s Mediterranean-flavored “Bright View,” Abigail Bailey’s electro-tinged “Space Girl,” Tom Novy’s “I Know U Want it,” and a Third Party remix of “Space Girl.”

Next release: Mario Da Ragnio [a], “Moom” EP is out January 21.
