New Ibiza music summit aims to take over from WMC
12 March, 2008 | 3.09PMFor years, people in the electronic music industry have been complaining about how Miami’s Winter Music Conference has lost much of its focus.
It certainly has become less about the ‘business’ and more about the parties: just check Beatportal’s guide to Miami to see just how many 100s of club nights, pool parties and raves are going on this year.
Networking and smoozing still goes on at the pool parties and in the back rooms of the clubs during Miami’s WMC, but it’s usually more of a social get together than a serious, business card-swapping gathering.
So it makes some sense that somebody would try to launch a rival music conference focusing just on the business.
Usually Beatportal would write-off such an attempt as futile because WMC is so established, but then we saw that Mr. Dance Music himself, Britain’s Pete Tong, is behind the new ‘International Music Summit’ and it’s being held in Ibiza, just before the opening weekend parties from 28th - 30th May 2008.
Hailed as the “G8 of Music Conferences” - a strapline that suggests international cooperation and mutually beneficial business development - the IMS is fronted by Pete Tong which immediately gives it kudos.
“At this time of momentous change in the music industry, the IMS has been created by leading industry professionals with an emphasis on enlisting fire breathing panels to excite and bring together key opinion formers within our industry,” say its organisers, who have also wrapped it up in a banner that reads ‘Back To Business’.
BBC Radio 1 broadcaster Pete Tong explained his thoughts behind the International Music Summit: “I am proud to be launching the IMS at such a critical time for the music industry.
“This is what we all love doing for a living, but we can all get better at what we do and learn from each other.
“IMS offers the glamour and glitz of my favourite party island...but with a back to business ethos leading into the big Ibiza opening party weekend.”
Indeed organising the IMS just before Ibiza’s clubs open is a shrewd move.
Ibiza is the epicenter of club culture, but had the International Music Summit been organised during the clubbing season, there would be less business going on because the delegates would be too hungover from partying or DJing.
Ibiza’s opening weekend attracts almost everyone in the UK and European dance music industry, so having a business-focused conference before the clubs open means people will just plan to land in Ibiza a few days earlier.
They’ll do business and stroke their chins, and then they’ll party afterwards.
What’s more, the IMS isn’t a free-for-all - the organisers are only aiming for 300 delegates, which means it won’t be plagued with 1000s of aspiring producers pushing you to listen to their demo CDs.
The IMS organisers also have some very clever events planned - including a Tom Middleton-led music production demonstration where he’ll create a complete track in just one hour.
The following day another producer will remix the track live in front of an audience.
The location of the IMS too is well thought out - Hotel Atzaro, Hotel Fenicia and Hotel Pikes will each host one day of the IMS. All three hotels are renowned Ibiza spots.
Will this replace WMC? No.
Is it trying to? No. But it’s very likely it’ll be a success, with Pete Tong at the healm.
