New “DJ” video game hits US / Japan / China

Check out this obscure title from Korea that was such a success in its first incarnation for PC and PSP, in 2004 and 2006 respectively, in China, Japan and Korea (with each country featuring songs specific to those regions), that some sequels are coming to the States.

The art in DJ Max Fever is particularly striking, so check out the finer details inside.

According to the excellent kotaku.com:

Korean developer Pentavision has announced that, yes, there isn’t just one new DJ Max title coming out, but two.

The PSP rhythm title will be released in two different forms: Clazziquai Edition and Black Square.

Pentavision is trying to satisfy both casual and hardcore gamers, but Korean website Ruliweb doesn’t specify if these each are divided for those purposes or if both editions will feature separate modes for casual and hardcore players.

As Kotakuite Torokun points out: “I did notice that CE includes a lot of mainstream musicians.”

We can only assume these strangely titled games are to be released in Asia only, with the US versions sporting different monikers.

As far as that tome of knowledge, Wikipedia is concerned:

In 2008, two new games in the series have been announced.

The first is DJ Max Fever, a combination of both DJ Max Portable and DJ Max Portable 2, made for release in the United States of America for the PSP and the first in the series to do so.

If you’re wondering what the game play is like, DJ freaks, well, it’s basically like Beatmania.

Here’s a video of one of the original PSP versions, complete with cute Asian music.

Let’s hope that some credible electronic artists make the final cut of the US-specific release, because at the moment this title seems to be a DJ product in title only.

Wouldn’t it be cool doing some rhythm action to the sounds of Claude VonStroke?
