New audio tech: Guitar Rig Session
4 June, 2008 | 5.17AMGuitar Rig has always trounced the trash out of competitors with its colourful interface, trove of features and deadly sound.
Its developer – Native Instruments – is now upping the bar by offering wannabe rock stars something billed as Guitar Rig Session, which you can see in our video after the jump.
Included in this package (in addition to Guitar Rig 3 XE, which you can see on the right) is a new piece of digital hardware known as Session I/O.
Native Instruments have become damned good at producing hardware, as proven by their Audio 8 DJ, Audio Kontrol 1 and Kore 2 experiments, and this new box-of-tricks upholds their flawless record.
It’s basically a cute device catering for those who want to get audio in and out of their computer, with the added benefit of a phantom-powered mic preamp.
It has two instrument / line inputs, plus level-controlled main and headphone outputs.
Whilst modest on features, this hardware is ideal for those who like to produce from a laptop - why would they need anything else?
Guitar Rig 3 isn’t just recommended for guitar freaks; it has become a staple in the studios of dance music producers who want to distort the bejesus out of their samples.
Coming loaded with delays, flangers, phasers, reverbs and so forth, you aren’t limited to producing rock ‘n’ roll with the Session I/O.
Drum & bass, breaks or electro house can be spiced up to no end with GR3 XE.
It’s even feasible to buy Guitar Rig Session for use with techno, using its Session I/O with a microphone in the style of MC Flipside.
Whilst GR3 will never replace the need for real hardware rigs [software is incapable of reproducing that mountainous analogue sound] it sounds awesome and is very easy to use.
Be warned, though: Guitar Rig XE is a compromised program, with less features than its bigger sister Software Edition.
