New Aphex Twin album on the way

Following on from last week’s announcement of Warp Records 20th anniversary celebrations is the news that Richard D. James - or Aphex Twin [a] as he is more commonly known - has a new album in the pipeline that will hopefully see the light of day this year.

Speaking to BBC’s 6music last week, Warp founder Steve Beckett revealed there is material on its way, so long as he can actually extract it from the notoriously ‘difficult’ producer:

“We’re definitely going to be putting out a new album by him. Hopefully it will be this year, if I can prise it out of his hands. It’s definitely on its way.”

James’ last album proper was 2001’s ‘Drukqs’, although he did put out the Chosen Lords compilation, a collection of his Analord material, back in 2006.

“He’s got his own unique view on life and obviously he’s just a genius musician and artist and it’s brilliant to work with him,” added Beckett reflecting on his time with working the elusive artist.

“He’s a genuine, English eccentric.”

The album will apparently be kept under lock and key right up until the final moment, leaving the wider world as much in the dark as to its content as Beckett himself:

“I don’t know a single note or anything about it,” he explained. “It will be as much of a surprise to me as anyone else. Basically I find out what it sounds like when we go into the mastering room and he puts it - well how it used to be, he’ll put the DAT player in and there it’ll be - so that’s the first time I’ll hear it. Then I’ll go onto my knees and thank him and then we’ll put it out.”

Aphex Twin was named last week alongside Andrew Weatherall [a], Flying Lotus [a] and Pivot [a] as confirmed acts for the Paris leg of the Warp 20 tour which takes place on May 8th and 9th at the Cite De La Musique museum.
