Weekend Weapons: Neosignal Audio feat. Phace, Misanthrop, Noisia & Rockwell
14 November, 2011 | 3.18AMDrum ‘n’ bass producers Phace and Misanthrop started their Neosignal imprint in 2008. To celebrate the label’s tenth release, the two conceived of a three-part series, challenging the most talented producers in today’s scene to put together something fresh and unique. In addition to tracks from Phace and Misanthrop themselves, they also invited artists Noisia, Rockwell and Spor to lend their talents. The first installment in the series was released at the edge of October and quickly scored a dominant position in Beatport’s Top 100 releases. The second package is their most recent delivery, soon to be followed by the November 25th release of their third and final installment.
We spoke to the camp over at Neosignal to learn more; read on for a special edition of Weekend Weapons featuring Phace, Misanthrop, Noisia and Rockwell.
Phace
Phace & Noisia – “Imperial” [Neosignal, forthcoming]
This is something brand new from Noisia and myself, and it was really fun writing it. It actually is quite a while since I liked one of my own productions so much, as this combines pretty much everything I love about broken dancefloor music. The whole buildup is just epic and gives you a feeling of going into a coliseum in ancient Roman times. People seem to lose it when it drops, as the energy level is ridiculously high. I have to play it pretty much every gig to get my kick!
Alix Perez & Rockwell – “Ballbag” [unreleased]
This one is also featured in all of my recent sets. I love how the whole thing builds up and then drops into a minimal, techy, stripped-down-to-essentials groove. The look you get on people’s faces when you play this straight after a more frantic track is just great! I have no idea on which label or when this is going to be released, but good things usually take a while, and it’s worth the wait!
Misanthrop
Misanthrop – “Amboss” [Neosignal]
I really enjoy playing this on the weekends! It’s really strange: I can’t really remember one single step of the production process, so I can’t really tell a little funny story about it. All I can say about it—I did it fast, I like the mixdown, and it was the last tune I finished in Stuttgart before moving to Hamburg… And it seems to work the floor perfectly.
Noisia
Phace & Misanthrop – “Energie” [Neosignal]
Here are 6 reasons why:
because the vocal is fantastic and German,
because it sounds like the track they were meant to write for years,
because it shows how that style can be done with great impact and finesse without sounding dumbed down,
because it has a sense of humor while being balls-to-the-wall,
and because the sound design of the whole “Energie” EP is fat.
Rockwell
Phace & Noisia, “Micro Organism” [Neosignal]
I’ve started most of my sets this year with this tune, and I think it’s the perfect opener. Regardless of what the DJ before was playing, the intro really helps to reset the vibe and build up the intensity for what I’m about to play. It sounds as if the huge atonal drone intro is going to lead into a drop of cataclysmic proportions, and I love watching the surprise on people’s faces as it switches 180 degrees into a really glitchy, yet funky, stripped-back, minimal, offbeat stepper.
