NAMM 2008: Meet The Developer… Sharooz Raoofi

Sharooz Raoofi, the 28 year old producer, has started a soundware company called Sample Magic (distributed through Big Fish Audio) that is swiftly becoming one of the hottest tickets in sampled loops.
Their electro house library is absolutely top notch — so well produced that Sample Magic won the Remix Magazine Technology Award for Best Sample Collection for 2007, which is why Sharooz is here in Anaheim for NAMM.
I caught up with Sharooz at the Dave Aude set (who incidentally, Sharooz recently remixed) and got him to share some of his production tips.
So you wear both the artist hat and the developer hat. How do you manage to balance both jobs?
We work with a team of three people including myself.
Since I’m a producer myself, my task is to ensure that the loops are absolutely legitimate in every way.
After all, my name as an artist is going on it.
So what’s your secret for getting everything to sound so authentic? What equipment are you using?
I do all my kicks and snares using an Akai MPC60 Mk 1.
The hats and percussion come from a variety of sources, depending on the groove.
For synths, I use a Roland Juno 106, Juno 60, Roland SH-101 and Nord Lead 3.
Everything goes into the TL Audio EQ-2, followed by an Empirical Labs Distressor.
The important thing is keeping an analog signal path all the way up to digitization.
So electro house is a hit. What’s next for Sample Magic?
The two big releases coming up are minimal and tech house and an unnamed (as yet) collection from Joey Beltram.
We’re really lucky to have Joey on board, as he’s extremely selective about this type of project.
What are the estimated release dates of these libraries?
Minimal and tech house was just released, and the Beltram collection will be coming later this spring.
