NAMM 2008: Five minutes with… Chris Cox

NAMM 2008: Five minutes with… Chris Cox

As half of Thunderpuss, Chris Cox [a] essentially created the sound of the Billboard charts for the first few years of this century.

Since then, he remains a force to be reckoned with in the mainstream pop remix scene here in the U.S.

Chris graciously took the time to answer a round of questions for Beatportal after his Pioneer set.

What brings you to NAMM?

I’m a gear whore at heart.

Like any other gig, I love toys and it’s a great place to renew friendships and business relationships.

It’s my candy store; I love walking around here.

What are your favorite studio tools?

Digital Performer is my main instrument right now. I’ve used it for every record I’ve ever done.

I’ve been using Ableton Live for sound design and inspiration. I use that on all my projects now, exporting the files into DP for final arrangement.

For plug-ins, I use the SSL bundle from Waves as well as the Universal Audio UAD-1 stuff. I have every UAD-1 plug-in out there.

And for synths?

I have a lot of custom stuff that I created using Digidesign’s SampleCell back in the day. That’s now part of my Native Instruments’ Kontakt arsenal.

For hardware, I use the Moog Voyager, Roland Juno 106, Prophet 600, Nord Lead 2 and an original ARP Solina String Ensemble.

So what’s on tap for Chris Cox in 2008?

I just finished the new Hanna Montana album, remixing every single off her last album, and then doing a continuous DJ mix of it.

I was definitely not trying to be cheesy — I used the same production quality on this record that I do on any other release.

Just trying to turn on the next generation to club music.
