Movement 2008: A family friendly techno festival
24 May, 2008 | 4.39PMNowhere but Detroit would you see families eating ice cream whilst listening to minimal techno at a festival.
Here at Movement 2008, the Hart Plaza site is a perfect place to put on a techno festival, with its large concrete areas (a concrete floor makes a soundsystem sound so much better than when its in mud), large grassy grounds, and view of the river.

A techno festival is a nice afternoon for families in Detroit
And Detroit seems proud of its techno history with Movement being the proverbial flag of techno city.
There are kids running around, happy couples enjoying the sunshine, as well as the usual techno heads dancing to the loops.
Even the cops here look like they’re having fun.
The Vitamin Water stage is the main stage of Movement 2008, located in a giant concrete outdoor amphitheater; and the organisers didn’t hold back on the sound either – it’s so loud, it actually hurts your ears (that’s great for the dancefloor, but not for your ears when you’re trying to get to sleep).

Most festivals have noise restrictions on sound (even the festivals located in the middle of a field, in the middle of nowhere), so it is very surprising to go to a festival located in the heart of a city which has super loud soundsystems.
From the Marriott hotel down the road (where all the artists, DJs and industry folk are staying) you can hear the beat reverberating through the streets of Detroit.

In any other city, it would be considered noise pollution, but in Detroit, it’s the natural soundtrack, as crucial as beeping car horns are to New York.
